Paper

Directed by Charles Wahl

Produced by Charles Wahl

Canada | English | 20' | Fiction

PAPER follows three interweaving stories about the vicious cycle of debt and desperation. A recent widow who has fallen behind on life’s necessary expenses, a professional debt collector with his own expensive habits, and a loanshark’s enforcer trapped within his own wheel of obligations.

A nuanced portrait of debt collectors and their marks, Charles Wahl’s tryptic drama Paper thematically explores how money clarifies, redefines, and disintegrates our ethical framework. The stellar naturalistic acting in this ensemble is rounded out by an incredible performance by Hugh Thompson. Hugh, together with Wahl’s writing, take you on a character journey from one emotional end of the spectrum to the extreme other. Best of Fest winner in 2019 for Little Grey Bubbles, Charles is back with his third SYSFF film, and certainly his most ambitious. Welcome home! — Erin Brown Thomas, Artistic Director
