SUSANA

Directed by Laura Gamse

USA, 2020

4 min

Despite the danger to herself and her family, former slaughterhouse worker Susana returns to the scene at night to care for animals on their way to the kill floor.

It’s really rare for an under five minute short to bring me to tears. But Susana gave me major waterworks. In this reflective film, an undocumented woman revisits a slaughterhousein which she worked graveyard shifts at before attending school as a child. She looks back on that time, not feeling bad for herself… but for the animals. She also looks forward, towards a brighter future for her daughter. The whole thing is just so moving. You have to see it.
