ASHES TO ASHES
Taylor Rees, Renan Ozturk
Winfred Rembert, a survivor of an attempted lynching in 1967, a Star Wars fanatic and leather artist, develops a friendship with Doctor Shirley Jackson Whitaker who is on a mission to memorialize the forgotten 4,000 African Americans lynched during the Jim Crow era. Together, their journeys of healing intertwine.
ASHES TO ASHES is a story that I found to be heartbreaking, moving, and historically important! Wilfred Rembert, a survivor of an attempted lynching in 1967, is truly lovable. Even though it was painful to hear his traumatic history, I found it heart-warming that he has been able to channel his trauma into such beautiful artwork. This film goes beyond a surface level exploration of historical and societal systemic racism, but also dives deep into the ripple-effects of trauma. — Lauren (Head Programmer)
